From the Precept concept to the 2024 Polestar 5, this car is nearly ready to make an entrance into the auto world.
This new electric luxury car will challenge the likes of Tesla for top bidding among luxury names in the EV world. The Precept concept came from Polestar in the early part of 2020, with the plan to reach production in 2024. Little did we know then the name would become Polestar 5 and that will be the flagship model for this brand. Underpinning this impressive luxury vehicle is a brand-new bespoke platform.
What’s Special About the 2024 Polestar 5 Platform?
The new platform for the flagship Polestar electric vehicle is the first of its kind. This structure is made entirely of bonded aluminum to make the car lightweight while providing the necessary strength. The Polestar 5 should have the torsional rigidity of a traditional two-seat supercar, but we won’t know for sure until the time is closer to the launch date. Building this new chassis is a labor-intensive process, making it difficult for the company to mass-produce vehicles. Thankfully, Polestar created a faster new process and builds the body and platform together.
Super Light but Super Long
Polestar expects the 5 to have a 122.4-inch wheelbase, which is slightly shorter than the Audi A8. That positions the Polestar 5 in a class of full-size luxury sedans. While being this long, the car should weigh less than half of what cars of smaller segments weigh. If this is true, we could see an amazing car with greater efficiency than any other EV in the market. The fact that a lightweight luxury sedan the size of an A8 could arrive soon is too intriguing to pass up.
How Much Will the 2024 Polestar 5 Cost?
The starting price of this new Polestar should hover around $100,000, with the top model reaching $125,000. This puts the new EV in the same range as the Tesla Model S, which is right where it belongs. We don’t know a great deal about this car. The concept model taken to the 2020 Geneva Auto Sow included a 15-inch infotainment screen and a 12.5-inch digital gauge cluster. These items could easily show up in the production version of this car.
Sustainability at the Forefront
Polestar focuses on sustainability and the environment with the materials used to build the concept model. The Precept concept model proved that with many car features made from recyclable materials. This concept used flax-based composites for the seatbacks, reclaimed fishing nets for the carpets, and 3D-knitted recycled bottles for the seating surfaces. While we don’t expect all of these sustainable materials to be in the production model, it’s not unlikely some form of recycling or eco-friendly materials will present themselves in the 2024 Polestar 5 when it arrives.
Challenging the Future
When the Polestar 5 arrives on the scene, it won’t simply be another Tesla fighter going after the big dog in this small pond. Currently, there are several luxury sport electric vehicles that Polestar can hunt down. The competition in the market includes the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, and Mercedes-Benz EQS. This is some serious company to keep; will the new Polestar flagship be up to the task?
The Powertrain is a Hushed Secret
We’re sure to learn more about the powertrain of this new electric car as we come closer to the release date. Currently, we know very little about the power system, but we can speculate. Hedging a guess, we think this car will use a dual electric motor setup, have 300 miles of driving range, and use many of the sustainable materials mentioned above. Until we see this car in action and get a look at what’s driving things, all we can do is speculate about its powertrain.
We can glean a bit of information from the smaller Polestar 2 sedan. This model has standard AWD, the two-motor setup we anticipate, and a combined 402 horsepower, which is enough to push the Polestar 2 to sixty mph in 4.1 seconds. If the 5 will be the flagship model, it will likely come with more horsepower and possibly a quicker sprint time.
The 2024 Polestar 5 Interior is Amazing
The luxurious look and feel of the concept model are incredible. There’s no way you would ever think of the materials used for this area of the car as sustainable, but they are. This gorgeous area showed two rows of seats for four people to sit comfortably in sporty-styled high-back chairs with plenty of support. We expect this new electric car to offer two trunks for your stuff, one in the front and one in the rear, giving you ample cargo room when it’s time for a weekend away from home.
No Mirrors, No Problem
Other cars already offer it, why not the Polestar 5. The feature we’re talking about is the set of side-view cameras in lieu of mirrors. In addition to the large screens offered, the car is taking us to the future with these cameras. Each will project images on the door panels to give the feeling of the mirrors, making it easy for any driver to step into this Polestar and have all the safety equipment needed where they expect it. Other cars that offer a similar system project the images from the adjacent lanes onto the infotainment screen when a turn signal is engaged.
The Roof of the Precept was Covered in Sensors
At the Geneva Motor Show, the roof of the Polestar Precept was on display. This area of the car brings an array of sensors that suggest the 2024 version could bring next-generation safety gear in the form of driver-assistance technology. Don’t be shocked if the Polestar 5 is said to be an autonomous vehicle, at least for short stints on the road. Of course, we won’t know what safety gear is in this car until Polestar reveals more information, which won’t happen until we get closer to the release date for this car.
Is the new 2024 Polestar 5 a luxury car you want to drive? If you’re looking for electric superiority from a boutique automaker, this could be the right car for you when it arrives.
