Electric Trucks for Towing and Hauling

Electric Trucks for Towing and Hauling

The Ramcharger will hit the market in 2025. The question is, does this iconic truck beat out the competition where it matters, or should drivers stick with the Ram 1500?

Why the 2025 Ramcharger Already Has People Talking

Ram has long been an industry leader and fan favorite for getting the job done. The Ram 1500 can tow over 12,000 lbs and has a maximum payload of over 2,000 pounds, easily beating most competitors.

The question is, will the 2025 Ramcharger do the same? While there’s no way to know with certainty until the new truck is released, this question already has experts talking.

What Is the Ramcharger?

The Ramcharger will be the first extended-range electric truck. This impressive hybrid truck has a total range of 690 miles, comparable to a traditional Ram 1500 with a combustion engine. The Ramcharger also boasts 141 miles of electric-only range.

To be clear, no one outside Stellantis has taken the Ramcharger out for a test drive yet. However, the specs released by the company look impressive.

The Ramcharger produces 663 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque. With the power of a combustion engine and an electric motor, it can tow up to 14,000 lbs and boasts a 2,625 lb payload capacity.

Going electric also comes with the benefit of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home power capabilities. The Ramcharger will put out 7.2 kW of power from its truck bed and features a 92-kWh battery pack to keep the juice running easily.

Is the Ramcharger Better Than a Ram 1500?

The gas-powered Ram 1500 remains a popular pickup for good reasons. With three available engines, it offers plenty of power even for drivers hauling serious loads.

There’s no need for EV enthusiasts to wait until the Ramcharger gets released to switch to a hybrid truck, either. The 2024 Ram 1500 offers an eTorque Mild Hybrid Technology System that collaborates with its 5.7 HEMI V8 engine to maximize power and efficiency.

As with the Ramcharger, the hybrid Ram 1500 gets extra torque from its hybrid system. This impressive truck maxes out at 650 lb-ft of torque. The 2024 Ram 1500 also puts out 702 hp to the 2025 Ramcharger’s expected 663 hp.

All-Electric Truck Towing Complications

Ram faces several challenges in designing an all-electric truck. The models on the market lose significant range when towing and charging stations do not allow attached trailers.

The benefit of the hybrid technology used in the Ramcharger and some Ram 1500 models is that it eliminates both of these issues. Drivers won’t have to worry about stopping to charge up midway through their trips.

Drivers will have no reason to stress about planning routes to accommodate range and the need for public charging stations, even while towing heavy loads. Eventually, these problems might have solutions. For now, hybrid technology remains the best option for towing and hauling.
