The Elegance of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Luxury Redefined

The Elegance of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Luxury Redefined

When it comes to top-level prestige and excellence, you can’t do better than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. This iconic flagship sets the standard for all cars.

For decades, the S-Class has been the status symbol at the top of the luxury car world. The current generation began in 2021 and continues for the current model year with more options. In fact, the EQS sedan is the electric version of this impressive Mercedes-Benz flagship model. This means you’ve got some great options when you want to drive this luxurious sedan. For this conversation, we’ll stick with the gas-powered S-Class.

How much power does this luxury sedan offer?

Every S-Class uses a nine-speed automatic transmission and the 4Matic AWD system. The starting point for this sedan is the S500, which has a mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that generates 442 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. This should be strong enough to rocket the car to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds while returning 21 city/29 hwy mpg.

Move up to the S580, and you’ve got a mild-hybrid 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. This powertrain delivers 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. At this trim level, the sprint to 60 mph only takes 4.0 seconds, but the fuel mileage is lowered to 18 city/27 hwy mpg.

Could you enjoy an EV without an EV?

If you’re not quite ready to drive the EQS and live with an all-electric powertrain, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class provides and alternative. There’s a S580e version of this car which takes a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and an electric motor to generate 510 horsepower and 554 lb-ft of torque. This is good for a quick sprint to 60 mph of only 4.5 seconds. The all-electric range of this PHEV is 46 miles, which could be enough for most of your daily driving needs.

The AMG model makes things more exciting

When you want the ultra-luxurious feeling of the S-Class in an exciting and powerful model, the S63 AMG E-Performance version is what you want to drive. This version gives you a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an AMG-specific battery and motor. This combination produces 791 horsepower and 1,055 lb-ft of torque. This setup gives the S-Class the desired look and feel while adding an incredible level of performance and handling features that make this car rocket down the road in a hurry.

The S-Class still uses a V12

There is a Mercedes-Benz S-Class with a V12 engine. This version is the Maybach S680 model, which has a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine. This setup gives the car 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The Maybach name means you’ve got an opulent luxury car that’s worthy of hiring a chauffeur to take you where you need to go. This model is made for status and not performance.

That status comes with a full package of higher-end features. The Maybach model has upgraded bodywork, second-row touchscreens, massaging seats, heated and cooled cupholders, and power-closing doors. You may want to add the optional built-in refrigerator and polished metal champagne flutes to create the height of elegance and luxury in your car.

The top of technology in the top of luxury driving

The S-Class can be had with Drive Pilot, which is the first SAE-certified Level 3 hands-free driving system. This system differs from Level 2 systems, such as GM’s SuperCruise and Ford’s BlueCruise in a specific manner. The Drive Pilot system doesn’t require the driver to pay attention while engaged. Drivers must take over controls of the vehicle when prompted, but otherwise, they can relax and let the car do the driving for them.

In addition to the Drive Pilot system, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes with a 12.3-inch gauge cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen. The user interface handles nearly all vehicle functions and brings a digital assistant to the drive, making it easy to change commands and adjust vehicle functions on the go. You’ll also find a built-in navigation system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and several USB-C ports. The standard Burmester 15-speaker audio system is pretty amazing, but you can opt for a 30-speaker system that’s even better.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class continues to be one of the most impressive and elegant luxury cars in the world. This amazing machine comes in several variations to make sure you have the luxury driving experience you’re looking for. Which of these S-Class models will be the one that you drive and admire every day?
