GMC Shines Bright in 2021 JD Power Mexico Studies

“Dependable” and “appealing” are two of the most common descriptors of the new GMC Yukon XL, at least according to a JD Power Mexico study. This large three-row SUV is one of many GMC vehicles that topped the list.

Here are some highlights to consider from this all-encompassing study:

JD Power Dependability

To determine the dependability of vehicles like the GMC Yukon XL, J.D. Power Mexico measured the number of problems reported over the last year on cars that were three years old. This data was used to create a PP100 score. A lower PP100 score represented fewer problems and thus a more dependable vehicle.

Survey participants were asked about 177 specific problems grouped into eight categories:

  • Audio/communication/entertainment/navigation
  • Engine/transmission
  • Exterior
  • Interior
  • Features/controls/displays
  • Driving experience
  • Heating/ventilation/AC
  • Seats

Based on the data on 2018 models comparing cars, trucks, and SUVs, GMC earned an average PP100 score of 175. The runner-up, BMW, scored a 206, followed by a 207 for Audi vehicles.

JD Power Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL)

J.D. Power Mexico also surveyed 6,733 original owners of 2018-2020 model-year vehicles. The idea was to measure the emotional attachment and excitement experienced by new-vehicle owners.

Customers answered questions about various elements of various brands. The answers were then quantified and given a score on a 1,000-point scale. The higher the score, the greater the customer satisfaction.

GMC again topped the list with a score of 925. The following brands were Mercedes Benz (916), BMW (897), and Audi (881). Outside of luxury brands, models from Jeep only earned a score of 905, followed by Mazda (906) and Hyundai (892).

Reasons To Love The New GMC Yukon XL

While the data shows that GMC automobiles are more dependable and appealing to drivers, that may not be enough to help you make a decision. If you’re in the market for an over-sized SUV, here are some reasons you might put the newest GMC Yukon XL at the top of your list:

  • Complete redesign and upgrade for the fifth Yukon generation (2021)
  • Brand new optional 3.0-liter diesel engine
  • Independent rear suspension improves your ride and cargo capacity
  • Longer wheelbase than the regular Yukon for increased passenger comfort
  • Impressive climate control system
  • Up to 8,000-pound towing capacity
  • 144.7 cubic feet of total cargo space
  • And more

The best way to get a feel for the new Yukon XL is to stop by your local GMC dealer and take one out for a spin. Of course, there are plenty of good things to say about used models like the 2018 edition. Once you get a look at this powerful SUV, you’ll see why it easily took the title from the J.D. Power Mexico studies.
