Does the Discontinued Mazda6 Have a Future in the US? Some Say Yes

If you make your way to your local Mazda dealer, the Mazda6 will be noticeably absent. The automaker announced that it would be discontinuing the Mazda6 in 2021. Although it was a popular midsize sedan, the automaker pivoted its efforts to crossover models, citing the demand for these larger vehicles. Unfortunately, this meant the end of the Mazda6.

As the model enters its 20th edition across the globe, its popularity is still present. This renewed popularity has some wondering whether the Mazda6 could make its way back to US markets.

Mazda6 Absent in the Midsize Sedan Market

The short-lived Mazda6 has been around since 2014. In 2021, Mazda followed the lead of other automakers, including Ford and Chrysler, by pushing itself out of the midsize sedan space. However, there is buzzing interest about whether or not this once-popular sedan could be reintroduced to American markets. If it is brought back after exiting the market in its third generation, it’s not clear whether the model would be a total redesign or simply a reintroduction.

As Mazda and other automakers leave the sedan market, popular models like the Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, and Honda Accord continue to dominate. These popular sedans, although impressive, still leave enough room for the Mazda6 to make a comeback of its own. Toyota and Honda have both been successful in the sedan space by offering hybrid variants of their best-selling models. If this sedan were to come back, it’s speculated that a hybrid powertrain could be the push to reignite its demand. In its final offering, the Mazda6 was equipped with a 2.5 L inline-4 engine that delivered 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque.

Mazda6 Remains Popular in Other Parts of the Globe

Despite being discontinued in the US, the Mazda sedan remains popular in other parts of the world. The sedan is still available in Oceania regions, including New Zealand and Australia, where it is marking its 20th anniversary.

Current models are being released with special edition 20th-anniversary badging. In Asia, the sedan is branded as the Atenza and is still in high demand. There, current models are also celebrating their 20th anniversary with special edition models featuring a new interior color palette, gloss silver grille, and other special badging accents.

Understanding Mazda’s Brand Presence

The Mazda6 was popular as a sports car in the States, with five available trims. Each trim level offered a touch of aggressive styling and power output that resonated with drivers. Complete with a comprehensive sports package that included an enhanced suspension system, the Mazda6 was a popular choice for affordable sports performance.

As the automaker pivots to a more luxurious vehicle lineup, some analysts wonder whether a comeback for this sedan would fall in line with more premium offerings. Mazda’s new vehicle lineup touts a KODO design, the automaker’s mission of “Breathing life into the car.” This design debuted on the CX-5 and is offered on the CX-50 and CX-90. These styling accents offer an air of sophistication, luxury, and comfort and could easily be conceptualized on a revamped Mazda6.

Could the Mazda6 Be Coming to a Mazda Dealer Near You?

The automaker has not confirmed or denied, for that matter, whether a Mazda6 could be in the works for the future in the US auto market. While demand for sedans slows, automakers like Honda and Toyota have made it clear that their presence in the auto market will still exist.

The question remains, however, does Mazda have what it takes to put its bid into that market as well? You can learn more about Mazda’s current offerings and test drive available used Mazda6 models by visiting your local Mazda dealer.
